T
he following day at school
was spent in a trance of
fatigue, and the final debrief
that evening was met with
appreciation and relief, as well
as enthusiasm about the
previous events. Thus it was with shock and
light-hearted groans, mingled with the same
enthusiasm, that Mr Belfield revealed a final,
final task, which happened to be the biggest so
far: to organise the junior ball happening the
next week.
This news was met with a flurry of chatter and
activity; Rosie Main ? and Tom Dunham were
elected to be our team leaders, and then
groups were allocated to sort out the numerous
tasks to be fulfilled, such as decoration, food,
and the all-important administration team who
strictly kept our budget on track and up to
date. Throughout the week Rosie and Tom
directed the whole group and made sure
everything was going smoothly, and kept
morale up as tension built towards the final
day. The evening before the ball was spent in
a frenzy of balloon-blowing, and the next day
brought excitement and nerves as to whether
everything would turn out well.
At 7.30 the juniors gradually trickled into the
Woodard Room for drinks. Glasses of soft drinks
? were stacked precariously on the tables, and
the relieved prefects-in-training stood around,
waiting to serve the juniors. The main event,
however, started in the dining room. The
decoration team proudly looked on as the juniors
took their seats for dinner surrounded by purple,
blue and silver, with stars projected on the ceiling
in a 'Hogwarts-esque' manner, in accordance
with the theme: 'A night under a thousand stars'.
Dinner was served and eaten, and hopefully
enjoyed, and we then ushered everyone back to
the room for a raffle, in which one lucky winner
won an iPod, the not-so-lucky ones such prizes
as a garden gnome. Meanwhile, in the dining
room the prefects hurried to clear away the
tables and drag in some sofas; the juniors
returned and the band began, and the rest of
the night was finally carefree and, for the
prefects, spent celebrating our achievement.
Many thanks to Rosie and Tom for being
excellent team leaders, as well as the staff who
gave us that extra push further (as Mr Belfield
liked to say) and enabled us to work together and
achieve something that we were truly proud of.
