T
his was a hugely successful
season, with convincing wins
over Taunton School,
Wellington, Canford and
Millfield, and only three
narrow losses. Alex Taylor
and Holly Domellof played superbly all season
and were unbeaten in the first four fixtures.
Against Blundell's they only dropped five games
out of 18. Hattie Cunningham and Jodie
Burrows played particularly well in this fixture,
beating the Blundell's 1st pair 6-3.
Next came a clean sweep for all our girls'
tennis sides against local rivals Taunton School!
The 1st VI set the tone for the afternoon, with
Holly Domellof and Alex Taylor continuing their
unbeaten run which at this stagestretched back
to last season. New pairing Louise Webber and
Charis Elphinstone made a great start too,
losing only to the opposition's first pair.
And the next week it was a similar story. All
our girls tennis players recorded a clean sweep
over local rivals - this week it was Wellington
who suffered the whitewash. Alex Taylor and
Holly Domellof cruised through unbeaten, and
Hattie Cunningham and Jodie Burrows played
some great tennis to win their matches 6-3, 62,
6-0. The Canford fixture resulted in another
fantastic win for our young 1st VI. Alex Taylor
and Holy Domellof were amazing, whilst Hattie
Cunningham and Jodie Burrows played some
great tennis, beating Canford's first pair in an
exciting game, where both pairs were often at
the net.
In an excellent 6-3 win against Millfield, Hattie
Cunningham and Jodie Burrows again played
exceptionally well, winning all three of their
sets. Alex Taylor and Holly Domellof suffered
their first setback of the season, losing their
match against Millfield's second pair. However
they bounced back strongly to win their final
set. Katie Vickers and Mel Palmer put a up a
great fight in all their games losing only
narrowly to Millfield's first pair, and went on to
beat the third pair 6-4.
A mixed 1st and 2nd VI played Sherborne, and
narrowly lost 4-5 in a superb match. The final
game was King's first pair (a new partnership
of Louise Webber and Holly Domellof) against
Sherborne's first pair, the match was that to
decide the outcome. As the game went on a
great crowd gathered to watch nervously, but
unfortunately our girls just lost out. The
standard of tennis throughout the afternoon
though was exceptional.
Against Queen's we struggled on the lowbounce
astro surface, and the first and second
pairs were unable to show the brilliance they
have displayed throughout the year. However
they did both manage to win two out of their
three games. Mel Palmer and Katie Vickers in
their last match for the school played well, with
many games going to deuce.
The season was all the more remarkable when
you consider how young this 1st VI were.
There will surely be many successful and
enjoyable afternoons on the tennis courts in the
years to come.
