A
nother busy year for the
King's College CCF got off to
a successful atrt when our
team came 4th in the
Somerset Inter Service Cadet
Competition at Norton
Manor. This was followed by further success a
week later, when our Royal Marines came 7th
out of 18 schools nationally in the Sir Steaurt
Pringle Trophy at Lympstone.
For the October Field Weekend, our Royal Navy
recruits spent the day at BRNC Dartmouth on the
Monday, while our seniors were at Wimbleball
overnight, and sailed at the Sailing School there
on both Sunday and Monday. The entire Royal
Marines section went to Hebditch's Farm for an
overnight survival exercise, while the Army
section were at Ilton Airfield overnight where on
the Monday the new Senior NCOs ran a basic
military skills 'round robin'. Half the Chindits
spent the dya on the Quantocks for stalking,
orienteering and shelter building, while the other
half visited the RNAS Yeovilton Air Museum,
followed by a substantial walk at South Cadbury.
In November Sjt ? Elle Marr was installed as
Lord Lieutenant's Cadet at the Bishop's Palace
in Wells. A week later on Remembrance
Sunday, the OA Wreath Laying Officer was
Captain Tom Lightfoot, 19 Regiment RA. The
school captains laid a wreath on behalf of the
College and the headmaster read the roll of
honour. The Last Post and Reveille were blown
by Tom Walters of the Army Section.
A few days later a group of senior cadets with
an interest in a possible service career went to
see a demonstration of firepower put on
annually by the Army on Salisbury Plain. The
whole range of armaments were on view, from
SA80 rifle to Multiple Rocket Launcher, from
Challenger 2 tanks to an Apache helicopter,
and two Harrier jets fired live rounds on an
open range showing just how powerful (and
deafening) our strike capability is on the
battlefield. If they were not frightened off a
career in the military, then the cadets are at
least thankful not to be on the receiving end of
such a strike! Our thanks once more to Major
Morris, a parent, for obtaining tickets.
Lent term
Training for this year's Ten Tors started in
Februaryy and continued on three further
Sundays. At the end of term Lt Belfield
organised an excellent Inter Section Orienteering
Competition on an interesting course around
Vivary Park. The Army section won the senior
competition, and the Royal Marines again won
the intermediate competition.
The beginning of the Easter holidays saw the
Adventure Training Camp at Glennridding over
Easter Sunday, when three inches of snow fell
overnight. 30 cadets and 9 staff enjoyed varied
weather and the usual hill walking, trekking,
climbing, sailing and mountain biking for the week.
