Last year Meynell
House triumphed
in many areas of
King's life. We
progressed to the second
round of the inter-House
General Knowledge
competition, something
Meynell had not done
for many years, and we
tried our best to get
through the semi-final of
the inter-House Debating
competition.
On the sports field, we
were more successful,
winning both Junior and Senior hockey
and Junior and Senior netball. The
majority of us took part in events on
Sports Day, all of us sporting painted
M's on our faces. Although we did not
win overall, many Meynell girls won
individual awards, with some breaking
school records.
The Third Form proved that they can
spell (on the whole..!) in the inter-House
Spelling Bee - it helps having a House
whose name is pronounced completely
differently to how it is spelled!
Treading the Boards
One of the year's highlights was the
Meynell and Alfred show, Mr Gresswell's
last. Both Houses put on an eclectic mix
of songs, sketches and video clips. Monty
Python's Ministry of Silly Walks was
introduced to a new generation, and
other memorable highlights include
the Vicar of Dibley sketch and the
Fifth Form's Take Me Out, featuring
a show-stopping performance from
Mr Gresswell as Paddy McGuiness.
The show raised much-needed funds
for charity, this year raising a total of
£1,038, divided among Somerset Flood
Relief Fund, Prostate Cancer UK and
the Emmanuel Foundation, which
helps street children in Bolivia.
Our annual summer ball had the theme
of The Ice Ball. We worked very hard
to transform the dining room into a
pale blue winter wonderland.
This was in sharp contrast to
the glorious summer evening
of late May when the ball
took place.
Throughout the year we took
part in many social events
and trips. Miss Cargen took
us surfing, we went on
cinema and climbing trips,
and to meals in local Italian
restaurants.
Meynell House had a great
2013/14, and continues
to be, in my opinion, the
best House at King's …
but of course I am
biased.
