Music
Rock Concert, October
The eagerly anticipated
first rock concert of
the year was certainly
full of excellent performances
and some emerging new
talent. The sound and lighting
was handled by Mr Bartlett
and his team and is getting
better at every concert. They
created a really authentic
rock concert atmosphere,
with plenty of smoke and
fantastic new lighting effects.
The range of music on offer
was again impressive, and the packed audience was treated to
over fourteen numbers, including Empire State of Mind, Black
Horse, Cherry Tree and, fittingly, Goodbye Mr A. The twentyplus musicians all performed with great professionalism, and
many members of the audience commented that they would
have paid to listen to music of that quality!
Vocal Concert, November
The vocal concert is now an established event in the musical
calendar at King's, and this year's offering was again a feast
for the listener. There were over twenty items, including
vocal solos and duets, and featuring pupils from all years. It is
always pleasing to hear how their voices are developing, as well as
witnessing the development of the poise and professionalism that
is so important for the vocal soloist. Musical items ranged from
the sacred to the secular, from operatic to lieder, from the 17th to
20th centuries. Naomi Harvey, Mark Lawson and Diana Rees are
to be congratulated for the high standard of singing in the school,
and this concert was a fitting tribute to their hard work and that
of their pupils.
Christmas Concert, December
In between the triumphant success of Guys and Dolls and
the excellent Carol Service, the music department managed
to squeeze in a light-hearted evening of Christmas music,
featuring the Wind Band, Big Band, strings and singers. The
festive season was celebrated with classics such as Santa Claus
is Comin' to Town, Snow!, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
and Merry Christmas Everybody. Each ensemble, including a
rock band, managed versions of all the festive favourites, and the
concert certainly made an excellent start to the season.
