It was a superb evening, with delicious
food, beautiful decorations and moving
speeches. A lot of the pupils involved
provided special touches, by bringing back
traditional red money wallets from Hong
Kong, which represent good fortune and
health for the New Year. Others brought
special sweets which are traditional for
decorating the table, and all of the place
names were hand-made by the pupils.
The catering staff also went to great
lengths to prepare a fitting feast, and
designed individual place mats for each
setting. A special thank you must go
to those who gave the speeches and
helped with the planning beforehand,
in particular Nicole Wong from Meynell,
Vivian Chan, Felix Chiu, Will Fung,
Hannah Lam, Vanessa Choi and Thomas
Prayer. There was also help from
Overseas Tutor Mrs Lisa Wrobel and Mrs
Shuling Brownlee.
Tug of War
In July the annual tug of war was held
between all Houses: strategies were plotted, physiques assessed for their
most fruitful position in the line-up. After
muddy struggles, and much effort, King
Alfred won the Senior boys and Carpenter
the Senior girls. Woodard won the Junior
boys and Taylor the Junior girls.
Masterchef
May saw the third inter-House Masterchef
Competition in the Cookery School. On
a budget of £20, the contestants had
to provide a three-course meal for two
people. A team of two cooks represented
each House, and came from a range
of year groups, from Third Form to
6.2. Contestants were judged on their
culinary skills, the quality of their finished
product, including presentation, and
Parents' Day
The culmination of the school year came
on 5th July, when pupils and parents
gathered for Parents' Day. The prizes
this year were presented by Maureen
Willson, the first and much-revered
Head of King's Hall from 1987-1999.
After the Leavers' Service in the Chapel,
the Headmaster waited outside the
west door to shake the hand of each
leaver and welcome them into the OA
community - with most pupils making
it to the door before giving in to tears.
The day ended with the Leavers' Ball
in the marquee, kicked off with a final
appearance by the Big Band.
