The other pairing is more recent - Sky Masterson schmoozes
Salvation Army preacher Sarah Brown purely to win Nathan's
bet - but Paddy Cartwright and Alicia Mileham conveyed their
implausible chemistry with real skill. Paddy's suave assurance
contrasted with Alicia's tipsy innocent abroad, but his growing
sincerity, and her sudden conversion to smitten lover, were
both credible, and their duets were touching.
Further individual roles of note were Max Molle playing Harry
the Horse, and Morgan Smith as a doting Ardive Abernathy,
while the entire cast, zoot-suited crap shooters lined up like
Neapolitan ice cream, and Hot Box Dancers in pearls and
mink, were brilliantly choreographed. The chorus, including
the Salvation Army choir, was lively and precise, and the
band, led by Colin Albery, brassy and rhythmical. The unlikely
repentance of the crap shooters at the Mission, led by Nicely
Nicely, gave us the best number of the show in Sit Down,
You're Rockin the Boat, ensuring the audience left with a
swing in their step.
