internationally renowned artist Richard
Long was invited to Sidcot School as a
guest speaker on the opening weekend
of the exhibition, which was then open
to the public for four weeks.
It has also been a successful year
for photography. Jake Williams, an A
Level Art and Photography pupil, was
selected for a place in the shortlist
of the Sony World Photography
Competition 2014. To reach the final
ten out of a total of 139,554 entries is
an extremely impressive achievement.
Jake's photograph was awarded a
commendation for reaching the last
ten, and exhibited at Clarence House
in London. Jake has a genuine passion
for art and a real flair for photography,
and it is fantastic that his talent has
been recognised in such a prestigious
national competition.
Similarly, Alia Hamaoui, a 6.2 Fine Art
pupil, was shortlisted for a national
competition entitled 'Who Are You?', run
by Arts University Bournemouth. From
all the entries, 50 were shortlisted by a
panel of artists. The winners were then
decided by public vote and the top ten
winning photographs are to be displayed
supersized on outdoor billboards
around the UK. Alia won enough public
votes to make it into the top ten and will
now have her photograph printed and
displayed around the country. Alia has
gained a place at Camberwell College in
London to study Art.
Finally, eight Third Form pupils also
had the opportunity to show their
large charcoal boat drawings in a new
restaurant in Taunton. The pieces by
Charly Beak, Charles Clough, Georgia
Colville, Harry Cooper-Simpson, Missie
Jenkins, Rudi Smith, Flo Wring and
Zhengyao Xu were selected by the
managers to be displayed on the walls
of Scrumpers in Corporation Street.
Once again the year ended with a very
exciting and vibrant GCSE and A Level
show. The high standard of work and
the variety of responses was a reflection
of all the hard work and energy that
pupils had invested in their projects
throughout the year.
