Befitting the origins of an amphitheatre, the performances
began with a visit to the ancient world. Members of the Third
Form opened the show with an extract from Agamemnon, by
Aeschylus/Berkoff (adapted by our own Mr Wood), showcasing
the talents of Lorcan Cudlip-Cook and Mattie Bullman. The Sixth
Form classicists ('The Big 3') then dazzled the audience with
a comical dramatization of extracts from Ovid's Amores, with
Ed Gibb reading from above whilst Josh Stickland and Phoebe
Smith acted the humorous scenes below.
Moving on to reminders of another circular theatre, the
Fourth Form evoked Shakespeare's Globe with extracts from
A Midsummer Night's Dream. They chose the ever-popular
scenes with the Mechanicals, and Adam Al Shimali deserves
particular note for channelling his usual 'loudness' into something
so constructive and compelling.
Musical interludes from the Chamber Choir punctuated the
dramatic performances, and Paddy Cartwright, Joe Merriweather
and Emily Albery stole the show with their a cappella version of
No Diggity. Puck's farewell, performed by Lily Thwaytes, ended
a sparkling and historic evening. Phoebe Smith and Josh Stickland
