With nine squads and 81 fixtures, this was the busiest
year on record for girls' hockey at King's. The
results this season were mixed, with the senior
sides enjoying a more successful year than the
juniors, but it is fair to say that all the players, both seniors and
juniors, improved markedly, which bodes well for the future.
The 1st squad were unlucky not to win the right to represent
Somerset at the regional schools' tournament, being narrowly
beaten by Queen's on the second barrage of penalty strokes - it
could not have been closer. For the 1st team, Pippa O'Neill was
the top goal scorer, closely followed by Lilli Munz, Nancy Rowe,
Alicia Mileham, Erin Slade, Grace Murray and Beth Horsham.
Alia Hamaoui was outstanding in goal, while Gussy Hydleman
worked hard in the right half-back position. Leea Dod, Chantal
Fifield, Annie O'Neill and Imogen Keeling were also very effective
in defence and showed commitment in every game.
The 2nd XI had a great season, only losing three of their 13 games,
with notable wins over West Buckland (5-1) and Richard Huish
College (3-0). However, the stand-out performance was the 6-0
win over Taunton School. Penny Guess was top goal scorer, with
9 of our 30 goals.
The 3rds had an extremely successful season: won 7, drew 1
and lost only 2 games. A highlight of the term was beating a
difficult Cheltenham side - throughout the majority of the match
the score was drawn 1-1, however
the girls battled in attack and
were awarded with a short corner.
Olivia Murray stopped and then
followed with a beautiful strike
on target, which sealed the game
2-1. Amelia Clarke captained the
side wonderfully, and the girls had
a fantastic attitude throughout
the season. They enjoyed their
hockey and this showed on the
pitch. Top goal scorer for the
season was Jess Sones, scoring a
third of our total goals.
The 4ths started the season
tentatively but grew in confidence
over the term and became more
determined in their play. In
defence Sophie Clarke and Emily
Glazebrook flourished, as did Molly
Merchant in goal. The attack also
became more dominant, notably
Annie Wagstaff, lssy Clarkson and
captain Flora Cohen, who was top
goal scorer. This combination of
