Concert organiser Anna Butler said "It was such a fun evening,
and we were delighted to raise a significant amount of money for
people who have had such a difficult time right on our doorstep."
Summer Concert, July
The summer concert is a great way to celebrate a year
of music-making at King's and the talent we have here.
It is also an opportunity for a last taste of the fine
musicians whom we have listened to over their time at King's.
Joe Merriweather, Paddy Cartwright, Camilla Arliss and Emily
Albery have all been major contributors to the school's music,
and all produced great performances for their farewell concert.
Paddy's fine bass, Joe's lyrical tenor and Emily's characterful
alto all blossomed in the fine acoustic of the Chapel, which
was filled by a sizeable audience. The brass group were again
on good form with some Renaissance Dances by Susato and
Cartoon Music by Jan de Hann. The musicians produced a
wonderfully strong tone and they are gaining in confidence
with each appearance. The String Orchestra is also gaining
in numbers, and provided sympathetic support for Helena
Winsey's perfectly judged and controlled oboe obbligato in
Gabriel's Oboe.
The final performance of the Chamber Choir for this year
was another tour de force, and they displayed the control
and maturity we have come to expect from them. Beautifully
balanced chords, excellent dynamic control and a real joy of
singing were evident from the start. The Chapel concert finished
with the rousing Wind Band, conducted by Karen Paul, offering
new pieces and some old favourites. Music from Frozen and
The Magnificent Seven are sure to become frequent items
in their concert repertoire, and it is good to see some of our
younger players enjoying being part of such a large sound.
The second part of the concert took place in the marquee,
where the even larger audience was treated to the professional
sound of the Big Band. Their set was the usual mixture of jazz,
pop and swing, and featured soloists from the band and the
vocal talents of Joe Merriweather and Emily Albery.
It is always sad to say goodbye to the many 6.2 pupils who have
contributed so much to King's music, but the summer concert
was certainly a fitting way to finish on a very high note.
