Lacrosse
By Lotti Cargen
Lacrosse is a relative newcomer to King's, but its popularity has
steadily grown. This year the team had regular friendly fixtures
and training sessions with Taunton School - a set-up which suited
the squad's growing skill and knowledge. Lacrosse began to be
shared between the boys and girls as the year progressed, and
proved to be at its most popular in the summer term. Many of the
squad regulars will be going on to play lacrosse at university.
Squash
By Jim Scott
This was a vintage year for the squash team, with some excellent
victories and a strong team spirit. Highlights must include beating
West Somerset College, Sherborne twice, and the first victory ever
against the Jesters.
All members of the 1st V played a key role in the season's
successes, though sadly three of the team have played their last
squash matches for King's. Will Potter joined the squad late in
his career but proved a talented and strong competitor. A special
mention must be made of Ben Pritchard and Harry Parkin, who
have played for the 1st team since joining King's in the Third
Form, way back in 2009. Over the five years of their dedicated
service to squash at King's, they have been invaluable members
of the team. Highly skilled on court, determined competitors and
tremendous ambassadors of the sport, they will be missed greatly.
In the House matches it was a closer than expected tussle between
Bishop Fox and Woodard in the final, with Woodard coming out
eventual winners by three matches to two. The Robinson Cornhill
Cup was therefore awarded to Woodard.
The final fixture of the season saw the boys deliver a
comprehensive defeat to the staff with a 5-0 victory. All of the
games were highly competitive and entertaining, with the best
squash being played in the struggle between Mr Lewis and Ben
Pritchard, the win finally going to Ben 13-11 in the fifth. The
staff are very keen for a re-match, particularly if there is a repeat
of the excellent post match curry.
Swimming
By Terry McHenry
The swimming squad had another excellent season. There were
early victories over Clifton and Blundell's, while the Senior Boys
and Senior Girls won and drew respectively against Wellington.
The squad acquitted itself very well against Plymouth College,
who form a large part of The Plymouth Leander Team.
King's didn't manage to win a trophy at The Meade King Cup, but
there were some impressive individual performances, the highlight
being Jack Gibbs going under 30 seconds in the 50m freestyle. For
a Third Form pupil, this is exceptional.
Over the year there were 53 personal bests set, which underlines
the improvements our swimmers are making. Many squad
members train up to six times a week, and this has included early
morning sessions at 6.30a.m.
The season finished with the inter-House Swimming Competition.
Two of our longest serving swimmers were in their final year,
but they saved the best for last. Alex Dunham won both the
breaststroke and freestyle, setting a personal best in the latter of
28.29 seconds. This is one hundredth of a second faster than Zach
Spiers' best time, so the new captain already has a target for next
season.
Emily Parris won all of her races, although she was put under
constant pressure from Jess Sones. Emily also won the plunge,
an idiosyncratic event peculiar to King's. This is the first year that
girls have taken part in the plunge, and with Emily managing to
beat the boys in this event, the girls' plunge will now become a
permanent fixture.
The coaches would like to thank the outgoing captains, Emily
Parris and Angus Urquhart, for all their hard work this season.

The award was made to two pupils this year, both of whom
excelled across all three terms, and supported their House
in numerous competitions: Erin Slade and Pippa O'Neill.
