hard work and teamwork all came together with a good win over
Queen's in the last game of term.
The newly formed U16 girls represented Somerset in the U16
regional tournament, having won the right in the county round
to do so. Here they played some great hockey, and only conceded
one goal throughout.
The U15As had a brilliant start to their season, and although the
scores look disappointing, they disguise some great breakthroughs
later on. Notable performances came from a 4-1 win against
Wellington and a riveting 4-4 draw against Clifton College.
The U15B team worked hard all term to improve their individual
skills and team performance. Highlights of the season included the
2-2 draw against Wellington and a tense 2-1 defeat to Queen's.
In both cases Natasha Spiers proved a crucial linking player in
the midfield. Kate Northover also deserves a mention for stepping
into the goalkeeper's kickers early on in the season. Despite never
having played in goal before, Kate quickly became a dependable
and score-line saving keeper. Although results for the season look
pretty disheartening on paper, this young squad deserves real
praise for their continued determination to up their game.
It was a mixed season for the U14As, with only two wins and one
draw. Throughout the term the team became stronger, working
well together, and finishing with a good win against Wells Cathedral
School.
The U14B team had a challenging season, but despite losing 7 of
their games, they did manage to win their first and last matches of the
season. Perhaps the most memorable was their victory in their debut
match against Wellington School, where they won 5-2. There were
shining performances from Katie Hewson, Phoebe Swan, Amber Stell
and Niamh Lyall. Both Lizzie Burger and Gemma Bulbulian defended
strongly to deny Wellington any hope of a comeback. Despite a
difficult season, they ended with a high against Queen's College. A
superb and jaw-dropping performance saw the team achieve a welldeserved victory.
A first-half goal by Cathy Vicarage put the King's
side ahead, yet a closely matched Queen's side ensured a tense battle
to the end. All King's players had to be constantly on their guards and
I was impressed to see great perseverance and effort from all.
