CCF CAMP
By Nikki Ridley
Location: CCF Central Camp, RAF St Mawgan
Date: 5-11 July 2014
Ten Cadets joined up for the challenges of CCF central
camp, along with Cadets from other schools. The idea of
the camps is that the varied and full programme will give
the Cadets the chance to put into practice the skills and drills
they were introduced to during the course of the year.
Our first day saw the King's contingent enjoying the Military
Skills package. Occupying a harbour area was the first lesson of
the day, followed by patrolling, then ambush and finally section
attack. Phoebe Smith was congratulated for her excellent control
and leadership during the section attack phase and the King's
Cadets were mentioned in dispatches for their excellent effort.
On Monday we had a non-military day: adventurous training on
the Penhale Training Area. Surfing in the morning was popular
with all - Lucie Waddon was nominated as best King's surfer. In
the afternoon the Cadets took on the terrifying Tyrolean Traverse:
a double rope stretched across a 50ft gap over an 80ft crevasse.
The Cadets were harnessed below and pulled across the line by
their colleagues. After the adrenalin rush of the traverse the
rest of the afternoon was spent in the bouldering room trying to
outdo the instructors. The champion of the day was Hugo Lyon,
who managed to reach a total of 39 handhold touches.
The range day was next. First up was some fun with laser
guns - Mr Mason seemed to be the target of choice, Conrad
Garbutt the last man standing. This was followed by live firing
on the range - this was the first time all ten Cadets had fired
live rounds. They experienced firing from the prone, kneeling
and seated position. The air rifle range was next - Alexander
Brown excelled with a perfect 100 score and the King's shooters
managed to out-fire their opponents from Headington School in
the head-to-head competition. The final activity was firing on
the DCCT range - this gave the Cadets a chance to work on
their marksmanship.
Our final military day was The Exercise. Because of the small
numbers in our section we combined with Cadets from Prior
Park and Plymouth College to undertake a large-scale operation
to neutralise the enemy presence on the Penhale Training Area.
The King's Cadets carried out an ambush, which included each
