part during Somerset Art Weeks. Former artistin-residence,
Derek Nice, also participated in
the Somerset Art Show, bringing a selection of
his winged forms which had inspired the school
angel project.
Heather Tweed's exhibition, 'Anubis Other
World Tour', has been visiting art galleries,
caves and other interesting venues since 1997.
And in May they were here at King's College!
Heather's sculptures are based upon Anubis,
the jackal-headed god of death associated with
Egyptian myth. Her installation of a group of
human-sized, dressed furry Anubis is
guaranteed to entertain you. Even chill you a
little because, although cuddly-looking, they are
also quite scary too (in spite of the cool
sunglasses). The artist has always been
inspired by Egypt and Egyptian art. She has
exhibited widely across the country, and also
has artworks in New York, Washington Library
of Congress, and Tokyo. Pupils were able to
mingle amongst the sculptures and take part in
the show as they drew from the art around
them.
At the beginning of October, King's took part in
the national campaign for drawing. All over the
country, throughout October, people were urged
to get involved. Here we took the theme of
Darwin, and investigated natural forms under
magnifying lenses. Everyone was welcome to
join in, and we had a steady stream of
participants. Pupils, parents, staff and
members of the general public all took part.
Experimentation and fun was the key to our
project. The final drawings were long enough to
wrap around the art school, and parts of the
work were displayed in the main corridor.
In November, pupils and parents were treated
to an afternoon of bead jewellery making. The
course was led by visiting designer Emily Green
of Intrinsic Jewellery. Emily really inspired the
groups with her own striking pieces. The short
course proved to be great fun, and participants
learnt the skills of wiring and securing fittings
to create beaded necklaces and bracelets.
Everyone left with a sense of achievement and
their own original piece of jewellery.
