T
he 1st XI had a superb season
of hockey, with notable wins
against Richard Huish (3-2),
Taunton School (6-4), Queen's
College (7-1) and West
Buckland (9-0). Each win
featured top performances from both team and
individuals.
A particularly memorable match against
Queen's ended in a 7-1 win, thanks to a
dominant performance from the team, which
saw successes not only from top scorer Hattie
Cunningham who began the match with a
flurry of goals after some excellent individual
stick work, but also from a few of the younger
members of the team, Lucy Sharp, Issy
Germain and Hilary Moorhead. Another
notable performance in this match came from a
further new addition to the team Hermione
Warmington in central defence, who played
solidly throughout the match and indeed
consistently throughout the season. Although
they were making their debut in the first match
against Richard Huish, for the rest of the
season they proved to be indispensable players.
As a team the 1sts had an
extremely successful season,
and much of this success must
be credited to the six senior
players, Hattie Cunningham,
Rebecca Potter, Fleur Netley,
Rebecca MacDonald-Doyle,
Jodie Burrows and Emma ClydeSmith.
Up front Hattie
Cunningham, Rebecca Potter
and Fleur Netley were a force to
be reckoned with. Captain
Hattie Cunningham
demonstrated an incredibly
intense level of skill and agility
which resulted in her retaining
the title of top goalscorer. Fleur
Netley and Rebecca Potter also
on numerous occasions
demonstrated the ability to stay
cool on the ball, and again
demonstrated impressive skill.
In defence Rebecca MacDonaldDoyle,
Jodie Burrows and
Emma-Clyde Smith consistently
played a tight and disciplined
game, again demonstrating the ability to
remain calm and collected even when under
pressure. The match against Taunton School in
particular saw a passionate and well-rounded
performance from Jodie Burrows.
The last match against West Buckland was a
fantastic way to end the season, for not only
did the team demonstrate how far it had
developed and improved, but it gave the six
senior players the opportunity to truly mark
their contribution to girls' hockey at King's.
Hattie Cunningham, Fleur Netley and Rebecca
Potter all managed to get themselves on the
scoresheet, with Hattie ending up with a welldeserved
hat-trick, as did Fleur Netley.
Due to the incredible level of concentration
from Rebecca Macdonald-Doyle, Emma ClydeSmith
and Jodie Burrows, not to mention
superb clearing of the ball, the clean sheet is
largely credited to them. Although the 1sts will
be losing a huge asset in the form of the six
senior players, the level of commitment shown
by the entire team hopefully will see them
through, and result in another successful
hockey season next year.
