A
difficult season started with
a magnificent rearguard
display against a strong
Canford side. With 80% of
the match spent in our 22,
we did exceptionally well to
limit the opposition to just two tries. Clifton
were tough and powerful opposition, but Lloyd
Griffiths scored a well-worked team try. There
were many positives to come out of the game -
man of the match was George Chapman for his
excellent work rate and tackle count.
We scored first in a brave effort at Blundell's
that produced a scoreline much improved on
from last year. A disappointing first half at
Bristol Grammar School saw the opposition
take a 22-0 lead. After the interval and a few
well-chosen words we performed a great deal
better, scoring a well-worked try and narrowly
missing out on a few more.
We put in a hugely courageous performance
against a much bigger Monmouth side, and were
able to control the game for long periods, but
unfortunately we were unable to capitalise on
the pressure created. A good first half against
Queen's put us out of sight by the interval, and
we continued our supremacy in the second half
to secure a richly-deserved 29-0 win. Against
Taunton School we put in our best performance
of the term, tackling resolutely, with Olly Gibb
imperious in the lineout.
After a sluggish start at Sherborne during
which we conceded three soft tries, we
launched a comeback, and began to dominate
the set-piece. As a result the backs were able
to play with time and confidence, resulting in
well-worked tries for George Bayless and James
Walsh - a good way to end a season in which
we made huge progress from last year.
T
he Bs got off to a great start,
beating Canford 18-7, thanks
to tries by James Jennings
and Greg Albery. Will Duncan
had a terrific game under the
high ball at full-back. Against
Clifton though, we found ourselves outgunned
rather by stronger and more powerful
opposition.
At Blundell's we fought hard right up to the
final whistle, and were unlucky not to capitalise
on a number of try-scoring opportunities. In
the end though we had to settle for a single
score from Matt Jaffa, and a fine kicking
performance from Todd Barrett.
We found ourselves only five points adrift with
less than ten minutes to go against Bristol
Grammar School, but ran out of steam rather.
There were scores from Chris Bond and a brace
of tries for man of the match Jordan Kanz. We
tackled our hearts out against a huge
Monmouth side, and at times we created
pressure. Unfortunately we couldn't quite
convert this pressure into points.
We finished our season with two tough games.
We were always on the back foot against
Taunton School, but played with great
endeavour, and made the opposition work hard
for their win. And at Sherborne we struggled to
contain the size and pace of the opposition, but
we showed plenty of spirit - which was the
over-riding hallmark of our season.
