Abersoch beach
by Penny Guess
The cool, salty waves lap up and over my bare
feet as I stand at the edge of the water. That,
added to the feeling and smell of the sand,
which is warm and comfortable as it slips
through my toes, makes me feel safe and
reminds me of the best times that I've had here
in the past. As I turn my head to face the
warm sun, beating down and warming my face,
I try to block out the harsh calls and hungry
screams of the flying rats, also known as
seagulls, which are circling overhead,
attempting to swoop down and steal a chip off
an unsuspecting tourist.
Oh, but the smell of those chips! Just like
heaven on a plate. The ever-so-salty, warm,
tummy filling smell that makes me want to just
rip those tiny, golden pieces of sunlight right
out of their hands.
As I look in front of me, out into the wide, open
seas, I spot a boat in the distance on the
horizon, that looks so small that it could fit
between my finger and thumb. To either side,
it's just sand as far as the eye can see. And as
I look behind, back at the screaming kids and
the bustling crowds of tourists, it's only now
that I appreciate this world of calm
peacefulness, so far away from the apparent
day-to-day lives of beaches.
