T
he Junior Colts started their
season slowly and were ten
points down after seven
minutes against Canford, but
then began to play some wellorganised,
intelligent rugby.
Laurence May set up a couple of excellent tries,
with Dougie Denton finishing superbly in the
33-17 win. It was a similar story at Clifton,
where we found ourselves 25-5 down at halftime.
An astonishing second-half performance
saw us run out eventual 30-25 winners!
In a dominant
display against
Blundell's,
thoughtful
decision making
from the backs
wreaked havoc in
the opposition
defence. Kelvin
Choi and Dougie
Denton scored a
hat-trick of tries
each in the
highly impressive
66-7 win.
It was another
excellent display
to beat a powerful Bristol Grammar School
defence, Laurence May commanding the game
from fly-half, and Rhys Davies setting up a
number of well-worked tries at outside-centre.
But at Monmouth we failed to deal with the
opposition's star player, and he eventually ran
in four tries. Archie Watts though had an
excellent game in the loose, and Jake Fleming
performed well at blindside.
Against Queen's, Rhys Davies kicked an amazing
penalty from only just inside his own half on the
1st XV pitch, and once we had gained control of
the match it was one-way traffic, with tries for
Laurence May, Dougie Denton, Jonathon Parsons
and Rhys Davies. We were at our very best at
Taunton School, the forwards providing quick ball
for the backs. Laurence May kicked well at flyhalf,
Archie Watts was as tenacious as ever, and
Ted Vickery had a superb game, in a resounding
24-0 victory.
In an amazing game of rugby against
Sherborne, we went 10-0 down in five minutes.
Excellent forward play and brilliant tactical
kicking by Laurence May and Dougie Denton
helped Rhys Davies conjure up some brilliant
running play in midfield. We scored three
unanswered tries to lead 20-10 at half-time,
and though Sherborne scored again, we tackled
our hearts out to win our final game 20-17.
Junior
Colts
William Bayless makes a
powerful run during the
Junior Colt Bs' 63-7 win
over Bristol Grammar SchoolI
n a tricky start to the season, the Bs
struggled against a bigger and quicker
Canford side, but we still managed to
play some sustained passages of good
attacking rugby, which augured well for
the future. Things began to turn round
against Plymouth, where good support play,
decision making and handling skills resulted in
an 11-try victory. Jake Fleming and Francesco
Roggia were the top try scorers with five and
three respectively.
In a physical and free-flowing game against
Blundell's, we responded well to an early
setback to lead 21-12 at half-time. No further
points were conceded while we managed to
stretch our advantage, running out comfortable
winners in the end.
Hosting Bristol Grammar School, we allowed the
visitors a 21-7 lead at half-time. However a
spirited fightback saw us get to within three
points of the opposition - tries came from Tafu
Yamamoto, Jack Storer and Ted Vickery. Against
Queen's we played with great cohesion,
supporting each other through phases of play,
and creating tries for Jack Storer (2), Will Murray,
Alex Grace, Francesco Roggia and Harry Billing.
But it was at Taunton School that we put in our
best performance of the season, with storming
runs by Jack Storer, Alex Grace and James
Fisher in the pack. Immaculate handling
despite appalling conditions saw us lead 19-0
by half-time, and the second half saw Ollie
Driscoll, Corbett Sykes-Moore and Arthur
Keeling particularly catch the eye, in a
memorable 41-12 victory.
