The 2nd and 3rds both lost
only one match all season,
away at Sherborne
T
he 2nds started their season
with an excellent win against
Queen's, the goals coming
from William Walters and a
coolly-taken penalty stroke by
Felix Ameye. We carried this
momentum through into the Millfield game -
we started strongly and never looked back.
Good defensive work from Will Pope and Will
Hardwick set up lots of attacking moves, and
goals from William Walters and Bertie
Broughton secured the deserved 4-1 win.
We dominated against Wellington to win 6-1,
in a fine display of passing hockey. Goals by
Chris Griffiths and Robin Danaher supported a
magnificent four-goal tally for Bertie Broughton.
The Sherborne fixture was a much more
evenly-matched affair, and a good second-half
performance led to a superbly-taken goal by
Tom Drysdale. The strong Sherborne side
though scored three goals on the break.
The following week, we returned to our winning
ways against Canford, with well-worked goals
from Will Griffiths, Bertie Broughton and Will
Walters, which sealed a comfortable victory.
George Lang controlled the game in midfield,
and Will Hardwick also created plenty of
chances. And it was another comfortable
victory in the match against King's, Bruton,
where we dominated throughout. Two goals for
Bertie Broughton and one each for Will Walters
and Will Griffiths rounded off a very satisfying
afternoon.
To finish the season, another impressive
winning performance against Taunton School,
Bertie Broughton scoring a hat-trick and Will
Walters adding two more. David Richmond
and Will Pope were solid in defence, and good
creative play in midfield by Chris Griffiths and
George Lang set up many scoring opportunities.
A really satisfying term's hockey!
A
n excellent season in which
we lost only once began with
a surprise attack from
Queen's in the first minute,
which caught us somewhat
off our guard, but as shape
and rhythm began to develop, we soon began
to dominate, but unfortunately could only
equalise, unable to force the winner. David
McNeill scored our opening goal of the season.
Against Wellington we could have scored
double figures by half-time had we shot more
accurately. A hat-trick by David McNeill, and
two each for Todd Barrett and Nick Mason
though contributed to a convincing win.
The following week at Sherborne we gave away
a penalty early on followed by another goal,
and though Nick Mason pulled one back after
the break, Sherborne were always comfortable
in hanging on to their lead.
But we bounced back against Canford, and
were in sparkling form, stringing together some
accurate and incisive attacks. Will Pope was
magnificent in goal, and the team as a whole
played with confidence and skill, in a 4-2 win.
It was another assured display at King's,
Bruton, which resulted in a convincing 4-1
victory. Our goalscorers were Henry Close (2),
David McNeill and Nick Mason. And in our
final match of the season, against Taunton
School, we conceded early in the game, but
then stepped up a gear, and scored just before
and after half-time to secure an excellent
victory, and finish our season in some style!
