A
t the unsociable hour of
2.00am on the first day of
the Michaelmas half-term
holiday, 44 members of the
chapel choir set off for
Heathrow to spend four
days singing in Barcelona. They were greeted
in Spain by torrential rain, but everyone was
eagerly awaiting the first concert that night in
El Vendrell, the home town of famous Spanish
cellist Pablo Casals, where they sang at his
annual memorial concert. Dispute the lack of
sleep, the choir were in excellent form, and
revelled in the amazing acoustics.
After a tour of some of Barcelona's famous
landmarks, including the Picasso Museum,
Park Guell and Sagrada Familia, Barcelona
Cathedral was the venue for the next concert,
where a good number of parents and friends
had made the trip out to support us and make
a weekend of it.
The weather turned to more customary warm
sunshine, and the choir took full advantage of
the beach and Mrs Morris' early morning
swimming sessions, before it was time for the
final concert in Collbato, the home of Spanish
organ building. The church was packed for the
concert, and the choir were on top form, which
was just as well as the organisers had arranged
for a DVD and CD recording to be made!
The organ in the church was indeed a fine
instrument, and was expertly played by
Mr Young from King's Hall School. The
audience was delighted by the whole occasion,
and a standing ovation demanded an encore,
fittingly a Catalan song that the choir had
learnt that morning in rehearsal, to round off a
memorable and highly successful trip.
