investigate the zonation of organisms on the
shore. It was great to put the things we had
learnt in class into action, and learn things
whilst being out and about. In the evenings we
wrote up the results of the day, played cards,
and, one evening, we even had a very
challenging quiz. The rounders game was
another highlight of the trip. The two teams
with their leaders became very competitive,
and Miss Hobday faced the task of being
completely neutral!
Overall, the trip was a great success. The
members of staff who were willing to put up
with us deserve a great thank you. The trip
would not have been half as much fun if it
weren't for Mr Cole's legendary breakfasts
(according to Rebecca Doyle), Miss Hobday's
rounders skills, Dr Poland's enthusiasm for
everything, and Mr Scott's organisation at all
times. All the staff in school, especially Miss
Thompson in the biology department, who
helped to organise the trip, pack the numerous
tents, sleeping bags and boxes of fieldwork
equipment also deserve a huge thank you.
outer uninhabited islands to watch Atlantic grey
seals, and seabirds such as the comical
puffins.
When we reached Tresco it became clear that
sand dune ecology was not an option. Instead,
we all longed for a hot chocolate, a cup of tea
or anything warm of some sort. Unsurprisingly,
we all headed down the island to the Botanic
Gardens, where a nice café made the island
much more appealing to its cold and wet
visitors. We spent the next few hours inside
the café and the Botanic Garden, waiting for
the boat which was to take us back to St
Mary's. The boat trip back went quickly, with
a small number of pupils falling asleep to the
sound of the sea. Ironically, it stopped raining
the minute we reached our camping site.
One of the best parts of the trip had to be the
rock-pooling. Many of us had never rockpooled
before and were very excited, and keen
to do our best. Felix Ameye must be
mentioned for his determination and
enthusiasm to find new species.
The following days we used a variety of
techniques, such as belt and line transects, to
