T
he highlights of the Under 14
As' season were undoubtedly
the eight-wicket wins against
Clifton and Taunton School.
Having been put in to bat by
King's, Bruton, we reached
231 for 3 thanks to a classy hundred from
Laurence May, well supported by Will Murray,
Rhys Davies, Matt Richards and Dougie
Denton. Bruton scored 103 for 7 from eight
more overs than we had faced.
Matt Richards took three wickets the next week
as Sherborne posted a total of 210 for 5. We
then lost early wickets and were never really in
the hunt, but Rhys Davies scored a defiant 40,
and there were useful contributions from the
lower middle order, particularly Archie Watts
with 30.
Clifton started well, but once their top order
had gone their effort stalled, and they scored
just 105 for 7 in their 35 overs. We replied
positively, and reached our target in just over
17 overs, with Rhys Davies finishing on 34 not
out, and Matt Richards unbeaten on 35.
Taunton School batted with skill and purpose to
post 217, Archie Watts turning the game in our
favour with a fine spell of 4 for 30. We then
chased with great maturity and control,
Laurence May leading the way with an
excellent 104 not out, and Matt Richards
playing some exciting shots too in his unbeaten
50, as we reached our target with just two
wickets down and six overs to spare.
After a poor start with the ball, we recovered to
restrict Monmouth to 135 for 8 in their 30
overs. After losing early wickets, James
Winsey steadied the ship with 27, and Ben
Shapland batted very well to launch a
comeback, but we ended on 104 all out.
T
he Bs' season started on a
frustrating note against King's,
Bruton as we batted fluently
before declaring on 183 for 2.
Bruton earned a draw by
finishing on 89 for 9. Against
Millfield and Sherborne we were only just
beaten, but by stronger and more powerful
opposition. We recorded our first win of the
season when we met Queen's. Thanks to a
fine spell from man of the match Corbett
Sykes-Moore who took 5 for 12, Queen's were
bowled out for 63. There were a few nervous
moments as we wobbled at 11 for 5 after three
overs, but Tom Counsell played a captain's
innings to guide us to victory.
We continued our winning ways against Clifton,
bowling the opposition out for 124, thanks to
some terrific bowling by Ted Vickery and
Nicholas Toomey. Patient batting by Harry
Billing, Robert McPherson and Ted Vickery saw
us home by three wickets, and the side was led
well by Tom Counsell in a game that could
have gone either way.
Against Taunton School we bowled well but
dropped too many catches, and Taunton's 192
was just too many, despite some sensible
batting. Then Jake Fleming's rapid 42 against
Monmouth gave us a good chance of chasing
down 152, but unfortunately he ran out of
support, and we were bowled out for 135 to
lose by just 17 runs.
