Under 14sT
he Under 14s had an
outstanding season, losing just
one match in the middle of a
tremendous run of victories.
It was an exciting opening
fixture against Cheltenham,
with both goals in our 2-1 win coming from
short-corners, both scored by Matt Richards.
We dominated against Queen's to win 2-0, with
another goal for Matt Richards, and Laurence
May getting on the scoresheet for the first time
in the term. There were many encouraging
signs for the rest of the season, though we
weren't always capitalising on all our chances.
We drew 1-1 against Millfield, in a game of
tremendously aesthetically pleasing hockey. We
dominated the first half, but Millfield came back
into it after the interval. Overall though it was a
hugely satisfying afternoon for the team. The
Wellington fixture was a scrappy affair, but there
was some terrific attacking play, including goals
again for Matt Richards and Laurence May.
The one hiccup in the season came against
Canford. After a goalless first half, Canford
scored twice on the counter-attack in the
second half, and our own missed opportunities
unfortunately cost us the match. We also
finished runners-up in the county tournament -
having beaten Millfield in the group stages, we
then lost to them in the final! 7-0 against
King's, Bruton though indicates a strong allround
team performance. Matt Richards
scored a hat-trick, while Kelvin Choi, Douglas
Denton (2) and Henry Robinson added to the
tally. Archie Watts was probably the stand-out
player, and things were nicely set up for the
season finale against Taunton School.
This was a tough,
competitive game,
and we were happy
to go into the break
2-0 up, through
goals by Nico Mills
and Matt Richards.
We relaxed rather in
the second half and
conceded as a
result, but stayed
strong to secure the
win, and cap what
must be judged a
fantastic season by
any standards!
T
he Bs too lost only to Canford,
so can look back on a
tremendously successful
season. Things didn't look too
promising though as we made
a shaky start in the opening
game against Cheltenham. We soon found our
feet though in what proved to be an evenlymatched
game, the goals in our 2-0 win coming
from Jake Fleming and Jonny Parsons. We then
recorded an excellent 6-0 win over Queen's, with
goals for Conor McAndie and Jake Fleming, and
an outstanding four for Tristan Drew in a
committed and impressive team performance.
It was a very even match against Millfield, with
Jonny Parsons giving us an early lead, but we
could not prevent a determined Millfield side from
equalising, and had to settle for a 1-1 draw.
We were back to our winning ways though in our
next fixture when we hosted Wellington. A hattrick
from Jonny Parsons and further goals for Joe
Fender (2), James Winsey and Jake Fleming
contributed to a comfortable 7-1 win.
Then like the As we came unstuck against
Canford; it was a patchy game in which we
held Canford at bay for the first half, but their
better teamwork led to goals after the break.
There were great efforts though by Jack Storer
to rescue things in goal, and from James
Winsey, who captained the side with great
determination. It was a far more confident
performance the following week at Bruton.
Our six unanswered goals came from hat-trick
scorer Rhys Davies, Tristan Drew (2) and Jonny
Parsons, and there were significant contributions
by James Winsey and Harry Catton.
In our final match against Taunton School we
were disappointing in the first half, but
increased determination after the break meant
we created several good chances to draw the
game, our goals coming from Oliver Driscoll and
Tristan Drew. This year group, both As and the
large squad of Bs, are going to enjoy great
success as they move up through the school.
