The Yellow
Spotty Bag
by Alice Geraghty, 3a
"Master Algie?" called Miss Prism. "I am going to take your
brother on a walk in his perambulator." Miss Prism, a young
governess of only twenty-five years, was under the
employment of General Moncreiff who had two boys of an
infant age. Algie was four years and Ernest was only one year.
"I will go and learn my alphabet" replied Algie who instead of
running to the learning room ran straight to the music room
where there was a grand piano. Miss Prism, who had just
received a letter, paid no notice to little Algie.
"Mr Chasuable …" whispered Miss Prism. Miss Prism had
not seen Robert Chasuable since college where she had
studied English. She had the biggest crush on him and out of
the blue after two years he had actually contacted her.
" … at college … saw you … decided to write you a letter for
I could never say this to your face … I love you."
Miss Prism got tingles in each nerve and promptly became
very light-headed and giddy. Ernest began crying. Miss Prism
snapped out of it and picked up the baby.
"Robert …" she thought and the tingle came back with his
very name. Drowned in happiness Miss Prism placed the
baby inside her own yellow spotty bag instead of the
perambulator and placed the letter with her novel My Dream
Vicar into the pram.
"I will see you later, Master Algie" called Miss Prism.
She walked dreamily towards the front door, tripping over the
cat Jim, on the way, but managed to get herself to the street.
However she never returned and neither did the baby.
