D
evon artist Kate Paxman
was commissioned to
create a unique exhibition
which celebrates the
Chinese community in
Somerset. The art
installation took the form of eight giant silk
banners printed with images that convey a
taste of the history of five representative local
Chinese families that live in the area.
Originally displayed at Hestercombe Gardens, it
was an exciting opportunity for the school to
hang the banners in the Woodard Room. Their
delicacy, richness of image and colour and
sheer scale was inspirational for our pupils.
Kate visited the school to talk to groups about
her art and the challenges of working on public
commissions. She also initiated an exciting
project with a group of Chinese-speaking
pupils. They worked together to create a
recording in Mandarin and Cantonese which
will be broadcast on radio.
