I
t was an impressive season for the 2nd
XI, losing only to Sherborne and
Millfield. We started in convincing
fashion against King's, Bruton, with an
impressive nine-wicket victory thanks
to some good fielding and tidy bowling.
Skipper Charlie Close led from the front with
five wickets and 47 not out. Then we lost
narrowly in the last over of a very exciting
match against Sherborne. Phil Downie's rustic
hitting late on ensured that we set Sherborne a
competitive total, and they reached their target
with just one ball to spare.
Batting first against Millfield, we managed 136
for 8, George Wayman top scoring with 34.
Charlie Close's early strike created much
excitement, but their middle order secured
victory. Against Clifton though we had a
spectacular afternoon, with an outstanding
century by Bertie Broughton and an impressive
88 from Dominic Bracher contributing to a
massive 280 for 6 in just 35 overs. Clifton
were bowled out for 135, with Bertie
Broughton making a reasonable claim for man
of the match with four wickets.
We put on a positive batting display against
Taunton School, but wickets fell regularly as we
were bowled out for 200, Jamie Grantham top
scoring with 50. Taunton made a positive
start, but a particularly good spell from Luke
Gavin limited them to 178. As the season
drew to a close, we restricted Monmouth to
112, thanks to excellent bowling by Dominic
Bracher, Jamie
Grantham and Taylor
Buller. William
Hardwick hit a
quickfire 43, but the
star of the show was
Ollie Dent who took
three wickets and
scored a brilliant 30,
rounding off a
thoroughly enjoyable
and successful
season.

T
he 3rds had an equally
successful season, losing just
to Millfield. Against King's,
Bruton we amassed a colossal
318, with Phil Downie
scoring exactly 100 not out,
and Sam Merriweather 93 not out. Wickets
from Will Griffiths, Nick Mason, Tom Garwood
and Luke Gavin ensured a comfortable victory
by 209 runs! Yeovil College batted first,
scoring 133 in 25 overs, Ollie Dent's 3 for 12
and Luke Gavin's three catches the highlights
in the field. Downie and Watts saw off the
initial onslaught in reply, Luke Gavin and Nick
Mason pushed the rate on at a crucial time and
two sixes from Alex Dathan saw us home with
two overs to spare.
We bowled well to limit Sherborne's total to
manageable proportions. With three wickets
down Henry Tetley came to the crease and
proceeded to hit twelve fours and four sixes in
his 86 not out, as we won in the 23rd over.
Olly Mason bowled with fire against Millfield,
after they had raced off at over seven an over.
Chris Griffiths took 4 for 11 to restrict them to
152, while in reply Tom Garwood showed
defiance and Olly Mason batted gutsily to hit
33, but their bowling was too strong really.
Canford made a very slow start against
excellent bowling from Dent and Gavin, and
though one batsman dug in, Tom Garwood took
four wickets, leaving us 115 to win, and he
returned to score 61, with good support from
Shane Scott seeing us home in 19 overs.
A weakened side struggled at first against the
Clifton batsmen, but once the breakthrough
came, wickets fell regularly. Will Griffiths took
3 for 35, and there were two wickets apiece for
Chris Griffiths and Tom Garwood, after Ollie
Dent had bowled tidily, conceding just nine runs
off five overs. In reply Tom Garwood carried his
bat for 62, Henry Tetley hit an entertaining 37,
and Chris Griffiths and Nick Mason pushed the
pace as we passed their total in the 20th over.
Ollie Dent took two wickets in the first over
against Taunton School, as they were bowled out
for 74 in the 15th over, Chris Griffiths finishing
with 5 for 17. In reply Ollie started explosively,
and Will Griffiths led us home in the 14th over -
a resounding conclusion to a great season!
