M
atthew Peek followed
the success of the
cross-country season
by leading the
athletics team with
distinction,
accompanied by the girls' captain, Alex
Rodgers. Matt was a source of inspiration for
the younger athletes and finished off the term
by running a series of personal bests whilst
appearing for the county, besides winning the
county pole vault title. Meanwhile Alex's
smiling enthusiasm encouraged the girls to go
from strength to strength, particularly the very
capable junior girls who did well in all their
matches.
There were highly successful individuals,
notably Robin Danaher (javelin) and Hilary
Moorhead (triple jump and heptathlon) who
went through to the national championships.
Charlie Maclean (steeplechase) won everything
at South West level but rarely had any real
competition so could not travel quickly enough
by himself to qualify for the nationals. It was
good to see so many others qualifying to
appear at the South West events, including
Hayden Tyler (shot), Katy Preece (long jump),
Issy Germain (triple jump), Joe Sharpe
(hammer) and Tom Drysdale (800m).
Many other individuals picked up wins at
county level including Rebecca Doyle (shot),
Matt Peek (800m and pole vault), Graham
Giles (hammer), and Alex Raleigh (high and
triple jumps). In addition 40 pupils (18 girls
and 22 boys) were selected to represent the
Taunton area at the county championships in a
full range of track and field events, a fine
testament to their abilities and to that of their
coaches.
