2 Even by the extraordinary
standards set by King's
each year, this has truly
been a vintage year,
packed with recordbreaking
achievements in
all areas of school life.
You'll see in the following
pages the astonishing
breadth of the King's
experience - a trip to
CERN for our A Level
physicists, a hat-trick of
wins in the Sir Steuart
Pringle Trophy for our
Royal Marines, and clean
sweeps by our cricketers
on five consecutive
Saturdays in the Summer
term. And that's just a
taste!
Record-breaking
examination results at
both A Level and GCSE
prove the maxim that
busy people are invariably
the most successful.
And the new series of
Horizon lectures for 62
has been a huge success,
greatly enhancing the
academic experience of
our most senior pupils.

Chris Holmes
W
e started the new academic
year in September 2012
buoyed by another set of
outstanding examination results. At A
Level 70% of entries attracted A*, A or B
grades, and 89% were awarded A* to C
grades. Both figures are records for the
school. Seventeen pupils gained three or
more A* or A grades, and in a year when
university offers have been particularly
challenging, the great majority of the year
group has achieved entry into universities
of their choice.
Four pupils achieved an impressive two A*
and two A grades: Greg Albery gained A*s
in Biology and Maths and As in Chemistry
and History. He will go on to read Biology
at Oxford. Lucy Sharp achieved A*s in
English and History and As in Latin and
Maths. She will read Ancient History and
Latin at St Andrew's. Charles Marshall
achieved A*s in Maths and Further Maths
and As in Biology and Physics, and will
read Computer Science at Oxford. Max
Baur gained A*s in Maths and German and
As in Physics and Economics, and he goes
on to study Finance at the London School
of Economics.
Philosophy of Religion and Ethics, in its
second year as a full A Level subject at the
school, achieved 80% at A* or A, while the
school's award-winning Design Technology
department once again proved itself one
of the strongest in the country, achieving
93% at A*, A or B grade, with 50% gaining
an A* or A.
Every single member of last year's 5th
form achieved five or more GCSEs at A*- C
grade, including English and Maths. Half of
all the examinations attracted the crucial
grades A* or A. Two pupils, Chantal Fifield
and Jack Holmes achieved A*s in all their
subjects, whilst 17 pupils, in a year group
of 92, achieved nine GCSEs or more at
A* / A grade. These include Emily Albery,
Camilla Arliss, Cameron Barclay, Amelia
Clark, Penelope Guess, Alia Hamaoui,
Albert Healey, Augusta Hydleman, William
MacEacharn, Joe Merriweather, Philippa
O'Neill, Victoria Smith, Georgina Thomson,
Rebecca Vickery and Edward Warmington.
This year's Batten Lecture was
delivered by John Ridding, CEO of
the Financial Times, who gave a
fascinating insight into
contemporary journalism.
