T
he opening match of the season
saw some great teamwork from
Alex Taylor and Victoria Greenland
against Wellington. Grace Murray too
was particularly successful, especially
with her spectacular smash shots.
The following week we showed great
determination at Blundell's, but were faced
with strong opposition. Players of the
match were Alex Taylor and Victoria
Greenland for their excellent partnership.
It was another valiant effort against some
strong Millfield players. Player of the
match was Iona Frith-Fletcher who played
particularly well under pressure. The new
partnership of Alex Taylor and Grace
Murray saw them gain player of the match
awards against Canford in a dogged team
performance that began to show real signs
of promise for the rest of the season.
We then lost by the narrowest of margins
against Taunton School in a very closely
fought match. Grace Murray showed
great tenacity, which earned her the
player of the match award, and a great
partnership between India Bannister and
Victoria Greenland put up a good fight all
afternoon against Sherborne.
Momentum then shifted when we turned
an earlier 3-6 defeat into a 7-2 win in a
return match against Wellington. And this
improvement continued after half-term,
when an outstanding performance saw us
beat Queen's 8-1. Iona Frith-Fletcher and
Grace Murray played superbly, winning
their three sets 6-2, 6-0, 6-0.
The final match against West Buckland
underlined how much progress had been
made during the course of the term, as
we ran out 7-2 winners. Third pair India
Bannister and Victoria Greenland played
really well together to win a tough set
against West Buckland's first pair, a
satisfying way to end a really encouraging
season.
I
t was the first ever tennis match for
many of the Bs against Wellington,
and they made terrific progress during
the course of the afternoon. Rebecca
Sherred was player of the match with
some impressive returns!
We showed a great improvement the
following week at Blundell's, with Mollie
Merchant performing brilliantly to earn
herself the player of the match award,
after stepping in at the last minute!
Millfield's Bs could only produce two pairs,
but were overall too strong, though Sam
Loomie and Dahlia Penna won five games.
We came second too against Taunton
School, but it was excellent to see Sam
and Daisy Daniell win against their strong
third pair after a long battle.
Against Sherborne we came up with our
best performance of the season so far -
Chloe House and Dahlia Penna played
some excellent volleys in a good battle
against their opposite pair. And we
showed how far we had come during the
term by beating Wellington 6-3, having lost
heavily to them in the opening match of
the season.
We ended the term by beating Queen's 6-3
in terrible conditions, Sophie Gibb
stepping in at the last minute and playing
really well all afternoon. Dahlia Penna and
Chloe House were pair of the match in
winning all three of their sets.
