A
useful mix of youth and experience
promised well for this year's 1st
VI, and we got off to a good start
against Wellington, with each pair playing
lots of good points, but perhaps not quite
finding that consistency to put the
opposition under pressure.
This was soon put right in the days before
the Blundell's match, when we looked
much more settled and confident. Tory
Clark and Charlotte Palmer dropped only
two games all afternoon, while
newcomers at third pair Pearllan Cipriano
and Martha Gray belied their lack of
experience in playing together by
managing to beat the Blundell's first pair!
A 9-0 whitewash against local rivals was
just the tonic our season needed!
We maintained this winning momentum the
following week against West Buckland,
Tory Clark and Charlotte Palmer again
winning all three of their sets, while
Jessica Kennedy and Minnie Taylor had a
good win against West Buckland's first
pair.
This set us up nicely for a tough week of
fixtures, that included both Millfield and
Canford. In the midweek fixture against
Millfield we found ourselves 2-1 down after
three sets, but Martha and Pearllan pulled
off a surprise win against the Millfield first
pair, coming back from 5-3 down to win
6-5. Tory Clark and Charlotte Palmer
again won all three of their sets, this time
dropping just the five games, to seal an
impressive 6-3 win.
This score though was reversed against
Canford, who proved strong opposition.
Tory and Charlotte won two sets, and lost
only narrowly to the Canford first pair,
while Martha and Pearllan worked hard to
win their final set 7-5.
In our final match of the season, Megan
Ameye made her debut for the 1st team,
and did exceptionally well with her partner
Martha Gray to beat the Sherborne first
pair 6-5. Sadly it wasn't enough to
prevent a narrow 5-4 loss, on an
uncharacteristically hot and sunny
afternoon!
This year we had more girls playing senior
tennis than at any other time in the last
ten years. Much of this is down to the
example set by the senior members of the
1st VI, and we say good luck to Tory
Clark, Charlotte Palmer and Martha Gray,
and thank them for having made such a
positive contribution to girls' tennis at
King's.
