F
resh from an incredible tour to
South Africa, we entered the
season raring to go, with
confidence, experience and strength at an
all-time high. Most importantly, the tour
allowed us to bond as a team.
We opened the season with a match
against Richard Huish, which has always
been a tough fixture, but we won 4-3.
Melissa McFarlane played an outstanding
match on debut for the first team, and
continued that way throughout the season.
We also welcomed Tarn McIntosh, Pippa
O'Neill and Gussy Hydleman into the team.
Taunton School, historically the most
competitive fixture in the hockey calendar,
was a fantastic game and certainly one of
the highlights of the season. We won 2-0,
with Tory Clark playing her best game in
midfield, really stepping up to her role of
vice-captain. Both Megan Ameye and
Flora Evans played superbly in midfield,
distributing the ball well and linking play up
the pitch.
Amongst our other fantastic wins was the
Queen's match, a closely fought battle
only won by an incredible reverse stick
shot by Tarn McIntosh in the closing
moments, making the final score 4-3.
Exeter School was another tight match,
but we came out on top winning 1-0.
Defence had a brilliant game, with Elle
Bracher and Kate Webster playing solidly
at the back.
Clifton was the most physical of all our
games, introducing us to a higher level of
play. We overcame the challenge and won
a great game 3-1, thanks to some superb
attacking with pace and skill by Issy
Germain, Hilary Moorhead and Lucy
Sharp.
Although Taunton was a brilliant game, the
highlight for me was our game against
Bryanston. We knew it would be a tough
fixture, and on paper we were the
underdogs, so having nothing to lose we
went out strong, hard and fast, and
everybody gave 100%. Leading 2-1 for
the majority of the game, we were unlucky
to concede a goal in the last minute,
turning the win into a draw. However the
result was overshadowed by what a
fantastic game of hockey our team
produced. This really showcased how far
we had come as a team and what we
could achieve with determination and
motivation.
We finished the season with a win against
West Buckland 2-1. This meant that we
had had an unbeaten season at home,
which is an amazing achievement and
something we can all take away with us.
Carla Mauersberg had an exceptional
season in goal, contributing significantly to
our fantastic statistics, with her fearless
nature and competitive edge making an
enormous number of impressive saves.
With such an experienced team this year,
we inevitably had to say goodbye to eight
fantastic players: Megan Ameye, Tory
Clark, Issy Germain, Carla Mauersberg,
Hilary Moorhead, Lucy Sharp, Hermione
Warmington and Kate Webster.
