E
ven though we began our season
away to Canford, we enjoyed a
plentiful supply of possession, and
were unlucky to lose by just three points
- good tries came from Guy Jones and
Will James. But we then recorded a
magnificent 27-5 away win against
Clifton, James Regan playing a pivotal
role at fly-half. Try scorers were Ryan
May, Aaron Williams and Guy Jones -
coach Snell gave the man of the match
award to the entire team!
This great team spirit continued against
Plymouth, as we battled hard to win 31-5.
Man of the match was Rob Ellis, and tries
came from Harry Heal, James Regan and
Kelvin Choi.
After a narrow loss at Blundell's we played
with passion and determination to win
25-12 at home against Cheltenham.
Conceding an early score galvanised the
side into action, leading to tries for Kelvin
Choi, Jonny Parsons and Harry Heal -
Ryan May kicked two conversions and two
penalties.
At Monmouth we showed a lot of spirit
against well-drilled opposition, with Ivo
Gavin and Matt Harden leading the way.
Hayden Tyler came on as a late
replacement and was a substantial
presence.
After a one-sided victory against Queen's,
we put in our best performance of the
season to beat Taunton School 16-5.
Skipper Matt Harden led by example, well
supported by Ivo Gavin and Ryan May, and
our tries came from George Chapman and
Francesco Roggia. A 50-3 win against
Exeter School was the perfect end to the
season. There were six different try
scorers - champagne rugby indeed!
D
espite finishing on the wrong end
of the scoreline down at Canford,
it was an encouraging start to the
season, with some flashes of handling
genius and some serious scrum
dominance. A converted try by Tristan
Marshall was the highlight here.
We then recorded back-to-back victories,
starting with an impressive 21-17 away
win against Clifton. Nico Mills piled over
from short range, and Jonny Parsons
scored twice with his weaving running,
James Jennings converting all three tries -
Ted Vickery was man of the match.
Despite being short of several key players
at Blundell's, we still managed to win 13-5.
It was a passionate and determined
performance, in which James Jennings'
kicking was outstanding, while Jonny
Parsons sealed the match with an
interception try. It was a different story
sadly against Cheltenham, when we
lacked confidence and conviction, and
made life difficult for ourselves rather than
for the opposition.
A much improved defensive performance
was the hallmark of the Bristol Grammar
School fixture, with Rob Duncan crossing
the try line. We then went on to a hard
physical encounter at Monmouth, but
there were many positives we could take
from the game.
With no fixture on the last weekend of
term, we were disappointed to lose what
would prove our final game against
Taunton School, but a spirited comeback
in the second half at least ensured we
finished our season with heads held high.
