W
e had to wait for the Wellington
fixture for our first game of the
season, and we faced muscular
opposition who prevented us from
building attacks early on, and under
pressure we made too many passing
errors. Using the width of the pitch,
however, we constructed some more
threatening moves, leading to a wellworked
goal, Harry Sharp crossing for
Will Bishop just before half-time.
Wellington came back strongly, equalising
five minutes into the second half, but in
the end superior technique and teamwork
held sway, and a Jack Holmes goal gave
us a well-deserved 2-1 win.
Millfield led 2-1 at half-time, with Jordan
Clayton having slotted home our reply.
Paddy Cartwright went on to make a
string of blinding saves, but they seized
three goals as we tired in the second half.
A couple of errors handed the initiative to
Canford, and they never looked back really
- a brilliant Jack Holmes solo goal was the
highlight of our afternoon. Conor Bannister
scored two goals in as many minutes
against Bryanston, giving us the momentum
shortly after half-time. Leo Goodman-Jones
capped a strong midfield display to make it
3-0 with a short corner strike.
The following Saturday we narrowly lost a
hard-fought game against county
champions Taunton School, in an excellent
display of determined hockey. Goalless at
half-time, Taunton pulled away in the second
half, before we drew level again through
goals from Jordan Clayton and Harry Parkin,
with Leo Goodman-Jones and Blaine Tottle,
our excellent captain, launching attack after
attack. Sadly, Taunton scored again with
three minutes to go.
One defensive error was the only blemish
of a good day, as we overcame Sherborne
3-1 in our final game of the season. We
struggled to get going at first, but once
Jordan Clayton scored his first goal the
floodgates opened and he was able to
complete his hat-trick, while Laurie
Moorhead and Hamish Manger were
outstanding in defence, as they were all
season.
T
he Bs soon found themselves 1-0
up in their first match of the season
against Queen's, thanks to an
Aaron Dobie goal. We spent much of the
second half in their D, but naïvely got
caught out by two counter-attacks to lose
eventually 2-1. Angus Urquhart was man
of the match.
After a rather one-sided affair at Canford,
we faced Bryanston, Angus Urquhart's
equaliser putting us back in the game
after going 1-0 down early on. Man of the
match Sam Hawkes kept us in the game
with some fantastic saves but it proved in
vain as Bryanston scored with five minutes
remaining.
We enjoyed some good individual battles
around the pitch against Taunton School,
but to be honest, we lost to the better
side.
In our final match of the season though
against Clifton, we went ahead when
Aaron Dobie capitalised on Paddy
Cartwright's assist. Unfortunately some
very resilient defence wasn't enough to
keep Clifton from equalising - man of the
match was Barnaby Miller.
