W
e began our season in
spectacular style, running out
8-1 winners at home to
Wellington. There were many long rallies,
but we always seemed to find the
winning shot - pair of the day was Hatty
Harrison and Victoria Smith.
It was an energetic and confident display
to beat Blundell's 8-1. Flora Evans and
Melissa McFarlane were the most
successful pair on the day, winning 18
games and losing only three. All three
pairs though played well and worked
confidently together.
We played some excellent doubles tennis
against West Buckland, and the
spectators enjoyed some entertaining
points. Flora Evans and Melissa
McFarlane played consistently well all
afternoon, while Hatty Harrison and Vicky
Smith were also unbeaten.
It was an outstanding 8-0 win against
Millfield, all three pairs playing some
excellent tennis. Flora Evans and Pippa
O'Neill were particularly impressive on a
great day for King's tennis.
The result against Canford doesn't really
reflect how well the girls played. They
stood up well to the challenge of playing
against the strongest opposition of the
term so far, with Hatty Harrison and Vicky
Smith enjoying an excellent win against
the Canford second pair.
It was a more successful afternoon away
at Sherborne, where we won our fixture
6-3. Flora Evans and Melissa McFarlane
won all their games, while debutants Pippa
O'Neill and Cara Kossen won two of their
three sets.
And like the rest of the senior teams, we
were in a strong position against Queen's
before play had to be abandoned halfway
through the afternoon due to appalling
weather conditions! Just the one blip
against Canford then, otherwise a hugely
successful season.
T
he 3rds went one better than the
2nds, recording the first whitewash
of the term against Wellington.
There was excellent play from all six girls,
but the most successful pairing was Tarn
McIntosh and Pippa O'Neill.
Blundell's put up a good fight, but lost out
to determined opposition, for whom Tarn
McIntosh and Pippa O'Neill won 18 games
and lost only seven. There was a
convincing win too for the 4ths in a match
full of good rallies, but with King's more
often than not finding the winning shots.
The most successful partnership was Flo
Main and Cara Kossen, winning 18 games
and losing only five.
The 3rds enjoyed an unexpected fixture
ten days later, when West Buckland asked
to bring two extra pairs at the last minute.
Both our pairs, Cara Kossen and MariaElena
Salfelder and Pippa O'Neill and Alex
Taylor, played some excellent doubles,
dropping only six games between them!
Although we lost against Canford, the
standard of tennis all afternoon was
extremely high. The most successful
partnership of the afternoon was Pippa
O'Neill and Tarn McIntosh with their
dramatic 7-6 win. The 4ths enjoyed some
long and exciting rallies, and all the pairs
took at least two games from each set.
Lydia Gray and Cara Kossen managed a
6-0 win against the Canford first pair.
A restructured 3rd VI put up a battling
performance against a strong Sherborne
side, and did well to lose only 4-5. The
pick of the pairs, Katie Blowers and Elena
Salfelder, started very strongly and won
two of their three sets. The 4ths were not
quite strong enough to overcome a useful
Sherborne side, but all pairings had the
satisfaction of winning one of their sets.
After that, the deluge at Queen's brought
our season to a rather soggy end!
