he Old Aluredian Club is the
alumni association of King's
College and exists to ensure
that former pupils remain in
contact with both the school
and each other, as well as
promoting and supporting the school. The
Club was founded in 1904 and organises a
Reunion Dinner in Taunton and a London
Reception each year, together with many other
social and sporting events.
The Annual Reunion Dinner was held in
November 2010 at King's College. The Guests
of Honour were Dr Roger Poland and Dr Brian
Lewis as the dinner marked their retirement at
the end of the Summer term. Roger and Brian
made a great impact on King's during their
time here and the dinner was a fitting way to
thank them for their services.
It was with great sadness that we received
news of the death of former housemaster and
Head of English, Peter Wood, in October 2010.
A memorial service was held for Peter at King's
College on Saturday 21st May 2011. Many
OAs, Friends of King's and staff came to pay
their respects.
Howard Padfield, long-serving housemaster,
physics teacher and OA King's Secretary,
passed away aged 100 in October 2010.
King's College held a memorial service for
Howard as part of the OA Day on 25th June
2011. Many OAs who had been taught by
'Padders' attended, some of whom had not
been back to the school since they left over 50
years ago. The day also included school tours,
a visit to the new Archive Centre, and ended
with Pimm's and cake.
On 3rd February 2011, the annual London
Reception took place at the House of
Commons. About 150 guests attended this
fantastic occasion, which was a great success
and attracted OAs of all ages. Sixth form
pupils networked with OAs and arranged work
experience with a Vogue photographer,
Hollywood film producer and even Geoffrey Cox
himself! We are grateful to Geoffrey Cox QC
MP (OA Tuckwell 1977) for hosting this event.
At the end of April, nearly 100 OAs, pupils and
parents attended the Hong Kong Reception,
generously hosted by Victor Chu OA. There
was also a reception in Germany at the
beginning of June in Munich which was well
supported, and included a mixture of pupils
past and present and their parents, hosted by
the Headmaster, Karen McSwiggan and Patrick
Scanlan.
Young OAs have enjoyed many sporting
successes over the past year. Jos Buttler
(Tuckwell 2009) received his England
Twenty20 call-up in early September to play
