CCF
Round-up

In July, Conor McAndie and Harry Billing opted
for the demanding Royal Marine cadet camp at
Gareloch Head in Scotland. This ten-day camp
involves plenty of mountaineering as well as
military skills, and both did well in the shooting
competition. The Summer Contingent Camp
was at a new venue at RAF St Mawgan in
Cornwall. The cadets enjoyed a full array of
activities ranging from live firing the new A2
weapon to rock climbing and kayaking. Many
cadets took the opportunity to attend courses
laid on by the military such as canoeing and
sailing. Chindit Camp proved as popular as
ever, with over half the 3rd form going to
Exmoor. Living outdoors under canvas, with no
mod-cons for a week, is a tough challenge for
youngsters, and schemes like Ditch Delight and
Night Fright still produce the squeals of
anticipation and screams of excitement.
Lt Smith led a party of cadets to Cyprus to
board HMS Richmond, the school's affiliated
ship. The cadets slept and ate below decks in
the Able Seamen's quarters. They worked on
the flight deck, flew in a Merlin helicopter, had
the chance to observe the workings of the
bridge, and fired rifles off the stern of the ship
while at sea. An exhausting but fascinating
week!
So all in all, the CCF has had a very busy and
productive year, with a great many
opportunities taken up by cadets. I thank the
CCF Officers and staff for all the hard work
they put into every Monday afternoon, and all
the camps and courses.
