C
anford is always a tough start
to the season, but we showed
a real hunger for the ball and
determination in our running.
First-half tries came from
Josh Stickland, Ed Keeling
and Alex Madge, and there were further scores
for Jack Beacom and Jonjo Wring. And it was
another very spirited performance at Clifton, to
win 24-21 against much bigger opposition.
Ed Keeling scored a hat-trick, and also set up a
try for Henry Dufosee - Jamie Turvill kicked
two conversions and Gabriel Counsell had a
strong game at scrum-half.
It was champagne 15-man rugby against
Wellington, when we scored seven tries before
half-time! Forwards and backs interpassed,
possession was retained and play was splendidly
varied throughout. Zack Spiers led the charge in
a tremendous win against Blundell's. Seven
points down at half-time, King's came back
strongly with tries by Rory Nixon-Eckersall and
Alex Madge, both converted by Jamie Turvill.
Large and speedy Cheltenham backs
dominated proceedings in the first half, but our
pack came back into it strongly to put the
opposition under considerable pressure. Zack
Spiers and Jack Beacom were our try scorers.
Behind early on against Bristol Grammar
School, we then started to put pressure on the
opposition to lead at half-time 28-7. Although
we let in two more soft tries, we scored three
more ourselves, Jonjo Wring the man of the
match with a hat-trick and some huge tackles.
At Monmouth we conceded in the opening
minute, but then dominated up front, and good
passing led to a Rory Nixon-Eckersall try.
However too many mistakes at crucial times
meant we couldn't add to our score, and we
had to settle for a well-fought 5-5 draw.
It was a comfortable 50-0 win against Queen's,
with good work by the pack starving the
opposition of the ball. The whole team
combined well to
secure eight tries
without reply. At
Taunton School we
weren't at our best,
but still managed a
good 20-5 victory.
Tries came from
Bertie Preston, Alex
Madge, Jonjo
Wring and skipper
Zack Spiers, in a
triumphant end to
a thoroughly
excellent season.
Harry Thomas off-loads out
of the tackle during the Bs'
10-5 win against Canford
A
magnificent 10-5 win
against Canford was a great
start to the Bs' season, with
the whole squad of 22
making a contribution at
some stage. Our try scorers
were Charlie Niekirk and Harry Thomas, while
Ed Denton and Eric Tsai both had good games.
We lost a closely contested game against
Wellington - George Retter scored our try, with
Ed Blowers coming close on several occasions.
It was a terrific afternoon at home to Blundell's
- Ed Blowers scored after a flowing backs
move, and in the second half Dan Mead
powered over to seal the win. At Cheltenham
we put in a great performance against much
larger opposition, to lose just 5-10. There
were outstanding performances from Harry
Thomas, Matt Dobie, George Retter and Tom
Frankham.
We played some sparkling rugby to beat Bristol
Grammar School 43-0, scoring seven tries in
all, including a hat-trick by explosive No 8 Dan
Mead. However the champagne moment came
when Alvaro Contreras ran in from the halfway
line to score his first try for the school. After
conceding an early score like the As at
Monmouth, we fought back strongly with pacy
backs' moves, resulting in 32 unanswered
points. For their part, Monmouth could only
score two late consolation tries.
A decent performance against Queen's led to a
comfortable 46-7 win, with Jack Beacom scoring
an excellent hat-trick. Kristian Willmott and Dan
Dobie too had strong games. And we finished
with our sixth win in seven matches at Taunton
School, thanks to early tries by Dan Mead and
Jack Beacom. We led 21-0 at half-time, and
excellent tackling by Harry Thomas and Kristian
Willmott ensured that Taunton couldn't reply.
