O
ur first game of the season
against Wellington was a
fluent and confident
performance, with some
outstanding passing and
movement. Nancy Rowe
controlled the midfield, and Alicia Mileham
scored an excellent goal from the top of the D,
Beth Horsham adding the second with a calm
finish.
We created plenty of chances in the first half
against Taunton School, but narrowly failed to
convert. The second half was much better,
with two excellent goals scored by Alicia
Mileham and Nancy Rowe. Bronwen Prosser
made an outstanding left-handed save in the
dying minutes. Against Queen's we soon found
ourselves two goals down, and had it not been
for some excellent saves by Bronwen Prosser,
would have gone further behind. We played
with more authority in the second half and
scored to get back into the game, but despite
constant pressure on the Queen's defence, we
couldn't quite find the equaliser.
The Sherborne fixture was a very close,
competitive match, with both sides playing
some excellent hockey. We went behind to a
scrappy goal, and although we continued to
create chances, we couldn't put the ball into
the net, and Sherborne scored their second in
the dying minutes. It was a commanding
performance though against Wells Cathedral
School. Alicia Mileham scored a hat-trick, and
led by example with her energetic chasing
down of balls. Annie O'Neill and Olivia Rose
were the other scorers in a great team
performance.
We were worthy winners in a very tough,
physical match at Blundell's, who were
previously unbeaten. A well-drilled shot by
Olivia Pittman gave us the lead, and a fine
move by Alice Mileham set up Olivia Rose for
our second. Although Blundell's scored five
minutes from the end with a short corner, we
held our nerve to record a famous win! Two
goals by Olivia Rose at Bryanston and a third
by Alicia Mileham gave us a comfortable lead,
but we wilted slightly in the second half, and
Bryanston scored their winner in the last
minute of the game.
T
he Bs found themselves under
pressure from the start of
their first game against
Taunton School, and could
only respond sleepily. After
some honest reflection at halftime,
we were a different side in the second
half, and this resulted in our two winning goals
- player of the match was Tara Benson. We
again started slowly against Queen's, but
played with more intelligence and aggression in
the second half. Queen's finished well though
and deserved to win.
Against Wells Cathedral School we played their
Under 13s, who had some talented individuals,
and we trailed 1-0 at half-time. More
determination in the second half and some
lovely wing play by Elena Close gave us a 2-1
win though - player of the match was
goalscorer Jess Sones.
At Blundell's too we came out on top, playing
with fast ball pace and some excellent
teamwork to win 3-0. We trailed 1-0 in our
final fixture against Bryanston, but managed to
raise our game to equalise with ten minutes to
go. Unfortunately Bryanston found their winner
right at the end of the game, but it was a
terrific season overall.
