aving come out of such a
brilliant season last year,
and losing over half the
team, we knew this year
would be something of a
rebuilding process, and
we would be focusing on bringing on new
players and really trying to bond as a team.
We welcomed Charlotte Dathan, Flora Evans
and Elle Bracher, Lucy Sharp, Kate Webster
and Virginia Nash into the team.
As well as a new team, we also welcomed a
new coach whilst Mrs Similien was on
maternity leave. Miss Marshall had a very
different coaching style, but it certainly worked,
and we trained with a lot of intensity, and
always with a great sense of fun.
We had a non-stop season, playing most
weekends with mid-week fixtures as well. We
had two great games against Wells Cathedral
School and Exeter, both of which we drew. A
great win against Colyton Grammar, 4-1, was a
fantastic end to our season.
We were always strong in attack, with the
incredible speed of Hilary Moorhead and Issy
Germain backed up by the skill and maturity of
Tory Clark and Hebe Mills in the midfield. Kate
Webster stepped up this year to prove herself
solid in defence, earning herself a full-time
place in the side, as did Lucy Sharp in attack.
We were extremely lucky to have Hatti Mason in
defence, living up to her nickname 'the rock'.
Top performances from her came in the Taunton
School and Queen's fixtures. Another player in
her last year was Kate Taylor, who was always a
fierce competitor in midfield, never letting her
player go easily. Goalkeeper Hannah Cartwright
finished off her last of three years playing for
the 1sts with some outstanding performances.
What was most encouraging was how we
progressed through the season, coming out
more strongly and with more intensity each
game. This bodes extremely well for the future
of hockey at King's. We'll be going into next
season with a very good team, especially with
a pre-season tour to South Africa.
