Pupils worked hard during the day, taking
advantage of the opportunity to see artefacts at
first hand. The diversity of exhibits seen during
this very busy day meant that there really was
something to inspire everyone who went.
During September 2010, the Art School
thoroughly enjoyed working with photographer
Ingrid Hesling. She spent time discussing her
techniques and practice with our pupils, and
challenged them to respond creatively. As part
of the open studios project, Ingrid will be
creating new work relating to the school and
exploring the theme of 'Open Spaces and
Intimate Places'. Her images of the school
present a new way of seeing and responding to
a familiar environment.
GCSE pupils learnt about photography and they
were set the task of producing photographic
self-portraits as part of their coursework unit.
AS pupils were taken on walks around the
school and Taunton, and they have been
working in a similar way to Ingrid, seeking out
the unusual in their immediate environment.
These photographs were then developed into
artist books. Several of the 6th form artists
had their photographic work chosen to be
exhibited at the 'Young Talent at the Octagon
Theatre' show.
Examples of pupils' art work were also selected
for exhibition at the 'Best of the West Show'
held in October at Blundell's School. This
show was designed as a
showcase for art amongst
local schools and colleges.
In November, Nicky Round
ran a beginners' ceramics
session which was open to
all staff and pupils.
Everyone was able to try
throwing a pot on the wheel
and learn basic construction
techniques. It was much
enjoyed by all who came and
had a go.
Throughout December and
January, Susie Needham
exhibited in our gallery. Her
show, Light Waves, was a
striking exhibition of
photograms and pinhole
photography. Susie has
perfected the techniques of
using photograms and the
pinhole camera, and this
was a solo show
demonstrating the beauty of
this approach with powerful
visual images. Sixth form
photographers enjoyed
developing their own
photograms inspired by her
work.
