The three valleys of the
Pyrénées-Orientales off er
contrasting landscapes, and the
beautiful sandy beaches of the
coast are well-loved. Collioure
is probably one of the bestknown
villages, famous for its
anchovy fi shing and a haven
for artists such as Matisse. But
other French beach resorts
such as Canet-en-Roussillon,
Argelès-sur-Mer, and Port-
Vendres are popular too.

Up in the foothills of the
Pyrénées behind these beaches
Collioure
are beautiful villages such as
Céret, famous for its modern
art museum. "Proximity to both
Spain and the mountains is

Tulloch. "The town of Prades is
popular with its large Tuesday
morning market, and sporting
activities abound - mountain
biking, climbing, or winter
sports." Nearby there's a typical
three-bedroom stone house
with mountain views for only
214,000 €.
From Perpignan - a vibrant,
cosmopolitan city - it's possible
to get the TGV from Paris Gare
de Lyon (5h05), or to Barcelona
in only 1h22 (you can also
fl y to Girona, Perpignan,
Carcassonne and Toulouse). For
