The GB Telemark skiing team is
on the road to glory. Named after
the region of Telemark in Norway,
Telemark skiing was invented more
than 150 years ago. Combining
elements of both Alpine and Nordic
skiing, it was ideal for covering the
vast terrain of the mountainous
Telemark region of southern
Norway and was the origin of
downhill racing.
According to leading UK
Telemark skier, Jaz Taylor, this style
of skiing feels just amazing! Jaz is
one of Britain's most successful
winter sports athletes of all time.
Currently studying Sports and
Exercise Science part-time at the
University of Suff olk, she also
competes on the World Circuit. By
the beginning of the 2020 season,
she had already achieved 29
podium fi nishes, including fi ve gold
medals! She has also competed in
the World Championships, placing
third overall twice, and naturally,
the British Championships where
she has been fi ve times winner!
To say she's enthusiastic about
her sport is an understatement:
"Once I tried Telemark, I was
hooked! There's more freedom
of movement, which means
impact from bumps in the snow
are absorbed into the equipment
rather than the knees and back,
and the boots are much more
comfortable! It's also great for
improving the alpine technique and
general fi tness.
Not yet a discipline at the
Winter Olympics, sponsorship
is essential, as UK sport funding
focuses fi nancial support on those
sports already selected. However,
Telemark will continue to try to
qualify for the Olympics by further
lifting its profi le and hard work
behind the scenes!
Jaz is quite clear about the role
funding plays in any elite sport
and considers herself 'very lucky'
to have both private sponsorship
as well as from Leggett Immobilier
and other corporate entities.
