LEGGETT MAGAZINE BRITTANY
obligatory cathedral and half timbered
houses but it ups the stakes
by offering boat trips out to the 40+
islands just off the coast, which are
ideal for exploring by foot or bicycle.
If you fancy a longer bike ride then
try cycling alongside the NantesBrest
canal, it might not feature in
the Tour de France but it is really
picturesque and perfect for families
and friends.
In contrast, Côtes d'Armor is on
the northern coast, famous for its
pink granite and ancient châteaux,
forts and abbeys - it truly is a historian's delight.
The bay at Saint Brieuc
is a dream for bird watchers and I
would heartily recommend a visit to
the old town of Guingamp, known
for good reason as "the little town
of character".
Finally, Ille-et-Vilaine adjoins
Normandy in the east of the region.
Many UK visitors come in to the
port town of St. Malo and drive
straight out, which is a shame. It has
a lovely cathedral, and tall granite
walls surround the old town which
has a history of piracy and adventure.
It truly is a destination as well
as a starting point. You will also find
the city of Rennes in this department,
it is the regional capital of
Brittany and an important employment hub.
It is one of the high-tech
and digital innovation centres in
France and home to 66,000 students.
