PSYCHOLOGY AND INSTRUMENTAL
TEACHING BSC (HONS)
The BSc (Hons) Psychology and Instrumental
Teaching is a combination which allows students to
gain a scientific understanding of the biological,
cognitive, developmental, individual difference and
social psychological principles underlying people's
experience and behaviour, and then to identify the
application of psychology to music pedagogy. The
programme is designed to equip you for a career as
an instrumental teacher and psychologist in your
own private practice, while at the same time
developing your skills as a performer. You will learn
how to apply psychological principles and theories
to people's every day experiences and behaviour.
You'll learn how to prepare pupils for public
performances, graded examinations and school
music assessments while developing an in-depth
understanding of individual, group and ensemble
teaching skills. This experience is supplemented by
joining one or more of our six orchestras, five choirs
and nine other taught performance ensembles. You
can also choose to study Alexander Technique, yoga
and ensemble performance alongside a wide choice
of contextual modules as well as master classes
given by visiting professionals.

is a combination which allows students to gain a
scientific understanding of the biological, cognitive,
developmental, individual difference and social
psychological principles underlying people's
experience and behaviour, and then to identify the

The Psychology element of the course is designed
to take students from an analysis of everyday
functions and attendant important behaviours,
through core discipline knowledge of theory and
empirical findings relevant to those behaviours.
Musical training will focus your study on individual
tuition in instrumental and/or vocal performance
throughout your degree, supplemented by joining
one or more of our six orchestras, five choirs and
nine other taught performance ensembles.
PSYCHOLOGY, MUSIC AND WELLBEING
BSC (HONS)

a combination which allows students to gain a

developmental, individual difference and social
psychological principles underlying people's
experience and behaviour, and then to identify the
application of psychology to music and wellbeing.
The course asks students to question what
behaviours are involved in people's everyday
activities, and how those behaviours might be
explained using psychological constructs and
methods of investigation. Matching a focus on either
performance or composition with a dedicated
training in music leadership skills, this route includes
progressive development of improvisation work,
study of community music and community music
outreach experience, as well as an introduction to
music therapy, world music and singing for health.
