PRIMARY TEACHING BA (HONS)
(LEADING TO QTS)
This course is designed to prepare you to work with
the most inspiring people - young children and
teachers. The excellent combination of course
elements, namely school placements and modules,
develops your subject knowledge and your
knowledge of children, classrooms and schools. The
Primary Teaching course prepares you for the
challenges of a demanding and immensely rewarding
profession. There is an opportunity to complete
subject expertise modules which will be reflected in
your final degree title, e.g. Primary Teaching with
English Education or Primary Teaching with Early
Years Education. The course is three years full-time,
but it is sometimes possible to complete it part-time
over a longer period.
MATHEMATICS AND TEACHING FOR
KEY STAGES 2 AND 3 BSC (HONS)

Mathematics has always been a particular strength
of Teacher Education at our University. This course
offers you a route into a subject-based teaching
career in either primary or secondary schools.
FOUNDATION DEGREE IN TEACHING
AND LEARNING SUPPORT
This three-year part-time course is for those who
are working as teaching assistants, or in a support
role in a school or another education setting.
Whatever the age of the children you are working
with, this course will develop your knowledge and
skills further and enable you to progress to a BA
(Hons) Degree or to gain Qualified Teacher Status.
You will attend the University for one day per week
studying aspects of Child Development, Inclusion,
Creativity and the National Curriculum for
Mathematics and Literacy in a supportive, friendly
environment. This course is endorsed by the
National College for Teaching and Leadership and is
an excellent foundation if you wish to progress into
teaching.
PGCE PRIMARY EDUCATION
This Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is
a one-year course that will prepare you to teach in
primary schools. You will work with our
experienced lecturers to develop your subject
knowledge and learn how to become a reflective
and skilled teacher. You will also spend 24 weeks of
the course on placements supported by practising
teachers in our partner schools. The course is taught
at Master's level and you will gain credits that can be
used towards further qualifications later in your
career. Successful completion of the course leads to
the award of the Postgraduate Certificate in Primary
Education as well as Qualified Teacher Status. This
course also offers a specialist Primary Modern
Languages route for suitable applicants.
PGCE SECONDARY EDUCATION
If you want to become a secondary school teacher,
our Secondary PGCE offers excellent training. It is a
one-year postgraduate course in which you spend
most of your time on school placements; the rest of
your time is spent at the University. You will be
working with expert lecturers throughout the year,
supported by practising teachers in our partner
schools. The aim of the course is not only to train
you to be a competent teacher, but also to train you
to become a thoughtful and reflective practitioner.
The course is taught at Master's level and you will
gain credits that can be used towards further
qualifications later in your career. Successful
completion of the course leads to the award of the
Postgraduate Certificate in Secondary Education as
well as Qualified Teacher Status. We offer the
PGCE in the following subjects: Biology, Chemistry,
Dance, Design and Technology, English, History,
Mathematics, Modern Foreign Languages, Physical
Education, Physics and Religious Education.
