PRIZE-WINNING INDUSTRY
EXPERIENCE
Our students and staff have won a national award
for their film on human trafficking. My Name is
Georgina, by undergraduates from the Department
of Film and Media, was named best for domestic
servitude at the Unchosen Human Trafficking
Short Film Competition in London.
The contest aimed to raise awareness of forced
labour in the UK by inviting amateur and
professional filmmakers to produce movies based
on one of eight real life stories. As part of its
production, undergraduate media students
worked with lecturers and industry professionals
to plan the film, which follows a young African girl
brought to England under false pretences before
being forced into servitude.
Another film by staff from the University's
Department of Film and Media has premiered at the
recent Aesthetica Short Film Festival in York.
Submerged tells the story of Billy Bourne, a
submariner whose crewmates mysteriously
disappeared when a teleportation experiment went
wrong, as he races against time to escape.
The thriller short was directed by our Senior
Lecturer Darren Mapletoft, and written by our
Programme Coordinator of Media Production
Michael Holley, while our Reader in Film
Composition, Stephen Baysted, composed the
soundtrack. They worked with undergraduate
students and professional crews including editor
Tim Porter (Shameless, Doctor Who, Game of
Thrones) and lead actor Darren Bransford (Deep
Cuts, Dead in France, Hollyoaks) to produce the
15-minute film. Submerged is now going on the
international festival circuit.
