floor are approached enfilade
- formal dining leads on to the
drawing room where double
aspect windows provide a delightful panorama
over the gardens. Stephen's study adjoins
his wife's, where she covered
the walls with traditional toile
de Jouy fabric and tented the
ceiling - a triumph and delight.
Upstairs are four beautiful
en-suite bedrooms all infused
with light - but it's their master
bedroom that you will find truly
enchanting with its blue-andwhite theme and magnificent
bathroom with an original claw
foot bath set centre stage.
To the left of the orangery
sits a self-contained apartment
in what was once the 'maison
de gardien' and the stables are
further beyond.
The gardens are a veritable treat
for the eyes; roses
scramble up walls jockeying
for position, a pergola provides
sheltered seating overlooking the swimming pool and
Carelle's potager is filled to the
brim with both vegetables and
flowers alike.
Before moving to France
the Sherwoods lived in the
entrance. Once three separate
rooms, the welcoming
séjour now combines kitchen
and everyday living into one
space. Stripping back the old,
the Sherwoods discovered
beautiful beams (now lovingly
waxed and treated), as well as
an œil de boeuf window above
the front door and an enormous
fireplace.
Throughout the house
Carelle has used a soft palette
of colours harmonising luscious
fabrics with trompe l'oeil paint
effects and objets trouvés.
