HÂTEAU DE FAYOLLE
is discreetly set, yet
perfectly positioned.
Its design takes in
magnificent, far
reaching views over the surrounding
landscape of rolling,
wooded hills and valleys. At
first you might be forgiven for
thinking you have strayed into
the magnificence of the Loire.
But you're actually in the heart
of the beautiful Dordogne.
Built in 1740, the château's
architectural style comes from
the middle of the 18th century.
But its antecedents are considerably
older: the Fayolle family
have owned this land for over
900 years. The first building
here - the Demeurie de Fayolle -
was constructed in 1143. It was
upon these foundations that
the château was built.
When you arrive at the
entrance, a tree-lined driveway
leads you to the front of the
symmetrical core of Château
de Fayolle. It is built of the
palest gold stone, with a slated
mansard roof of a pleasing,
dark grey aspect. Although it is
grand, the château retains the
intimacy of a family home. Its
last chatelaine, Mme d'Assigny
de Fayolle, extends a warm and
generous welcome.
The entrance hall is high
and has perfect proportions.
Tiled floors match the stone
steps of the magnificent staircase,
which leads to the first
floor. One of the greatest joys
of the building is its integrity.
