ONE TO WATCH
"The historic town of St Jean d'Angély is the perfect mixture
of historic buildings, fabulous restaurants and a superb
twice-weekly market. With a population of around
7 500, it can trace its roots back to the 9th century, when
it housed a relic of St John the Baptist from which the
town takes its name. It has a glorious abbey, in which
you'll find the Centre for European Culture. It has easy
access to some of the best beaches in France, and would
grace any shortlist. The town is situated on the route that
leads to Santiago de Compostela and is a stopping point
for pilgrims."

and always seek the advice of
our local agents. They'll be able
to tell you about the area itself
and the local property market,
particularly where the best
value lies.
AQUITAINE
The Aquitaine is home to five
départements, including the
ever popular Dordogne which,
surprisingly, has an average
property price of just €115,000.
This is a region that stretches
from the Spanish border up
past Bordeaux and into the
Gironde estuary. Here you'll
find the finest and most sought
after wines in the world as well
as a city of beauty that is now
a UNESCO world heritage site.
For such a popular region, you'll
find that average property
prices are most reasonable.

OUTH WEST FRANCE
has long been one
of the most popular
areas for international buyers,
with the
Dordogne valley leading the
charge. The last 12 months
have been no exception, and
it's not just the traditional areas
that have seen a boom in sales.
It's an area that appeals to all
sorts, from urban professionals
looking for a holiday home to
retirees looking for a better
quality of life. Here's my guide
to the three regions that make
up south west France.
POITOU-CHARENTES
This is the region I call home,
and it saw a 17% increase in
international buyers last year.
They are attracted by the microclimate that makes
the coastal
area the second sunniest area
of France, as well as by the
beautiful beaches and islands
of the Charente-Maritime. Head
inland and we have plenty to
offer too. Both Deux-Sèvres
and Vienne are départements
steeped in history. Poitiers, a
city founded by the Celts, mixes
the old and the new brilliantly.
To find out what I mean, take
a visit to Futuroscope and
prepare to be impressed. If
you like to explore vineyards,
visit the Charente - Cognac in
particular - and you won't be
disappointed.
MIDI-PYRÉNÉES
This magazine doesn't have
enough space to convey the
beauty and the diversity of the
eight départements that make
up this region. Three of them
front the Spanish border and
contain the majestic Pyrénées
mountains. Move to the northernmost boundaries in the Lot
and Aveyron, and you really will
find yourself in glorious rural
France. If you're looking for
property here then the lesson is
